Letter to Those Touting Senseless Arguments Against Universal Health Care Reform

72

By Things Considered

Dear Crazy People,

You're being lied to, hoodwinked and used. They've been playing on your fears and suppressed prejudices. You've been misinformed for too long, and you've become gullible, malleable, like literally-silly putty in their hands. You are the very vocal, public opponents to effective health care reform who do the dirty work for the men behind the curtain.

Among you with so-called arguments against health care reform are those who still hate everyone not white, who are reacting from a place of pent up fury over the fact that the great Unites States of America has a black man for its president, a Muslim in the congress, and a Hispanic woman on the supreme court. Among you are those who insistently promote and try to enforce upon us all your many and often twisted versions of a 'Christian' viewpoint, who work to instill 'Christian' beliefs into the policies of our free country. Among you are those who believe in varying conspiracy theories that all have one thing in common -their utter ridiculousness. Among you with so-call arguments against healthcare reform that turn out to be nothing more than lies are those who in the past have vehemently opposed integration, equal voting rights for blacks and equal pay for women, the separation of church and state, and -once upon a time- Medicare.

Now they have convinced the vast majority of you that Obama is a foreign born, America hating terrorist in disguise, and that the government is trying to take away your freedoms by providing effective, comprehensive health care reform. In their fight against health care reform, they have convinced you that immigrants are the reason our health care costs have risen, and that health care reform is just an entitlement program to benefit lazy minorities. In their fight against health care reform, they have convinced you that the protection of the greedy machine of corporate health care insurance providers who make their obscene profits off of the business of denying needed care to sick Americans is the only way to protect our free-market society, and that elected officials are conspiring against all reason and logic to kill the collective grandma of their constituents.

They have pretended the facts don't exist. They have touted free-market innovation in their fight against health care reform, ignoring the fact that the mass of medical research is funded by the government. They have married themselves to the free-market interests of huge insurance corporations, while avoiding the fact that small businesses, Mom and Pop businesses, main street USA businesses, can not afford to stay in business and provide affordable health care to their employees at the same time. They never mention that with the healthcare costs these days, would-be small business owners are too afraid to leave their corporate jobs and venture out on their own, because that would mean losing their existing employment subsidized health insurance, which may be irreplaceable at the whims of insurers, or only so prohibitively expensive as to make it impossible to afford. Instead they protect a system that thwarts free-market enterprise and innovation, and in their fight against health care reform they have fooled you into protecting that system as well.

They have hailed our health care insurance system as the best in the world. They have told you that the whole world comes to America for their health care needs, and kept from you the truth that many affluent Americans go elsewhere to have their medical needs met, because it is just as good and up to 90% less expensive. They have pretended that there isn't a mass migration of Americans into Mexico and Canada where there are government plans that don't bankrupt their retirement savings.

They never mention in their fight against health care reform the doubling of insurance premiums over the last nine years, or the fact that every thirty seconds another American goes bankrupt due to high medical costs -most of whom had health insurance, or that over 1300 people die unnecessarily every single day in America due to a chronic lack of health care insurance.

They distract you from the truths about the inadequacies and greed guided policies of the health insurance corporations with lies about government plans for death panels and rationing, pretending that insurance corporations aren't doing exactly what they claim the government will. They distract you with news media's focus on the ranting minority at town hall meetings, with nay saying political figures who are either in the pockets of insurance corporations or who otherwise make their very comfortable livings from being divisively partisan figures.

Some Facts About American Health Care

  • Over 1300 People Die in America Every Day Due to a Chronic Lack of Affordable, Comprehensive Health Insurance
  • 60% of all Bankruptcies in America are Due to the High Costs of Medical Care, More Than Half of Them Had Insurance
  • Health Insurance Premiums Have Increased by 119% in the Last Ten Years
  • Insurance Company CEO's Average a Salary of Over $14,000,000 Every Year
  • Insurance Company Profits Rose 428% from 2000 to 2007
  • Every Day, Over 14,000 Americans Lose Their Employment Based Healthcare Insurance
  • Illegal Immigrants Consume Less Than 1% of Our Health Care Spending

In their fight against health care reform, they have shouted and cursed and spit on TV falseness, brazen lies and infuriatingly hypocritical propaganda to instill into your gullible minds an urgency to fight back against a tyranny that is only a mirrored reflection of themselves. And you! You bring your guns and your ‘Obama is a Nazi’ signs and you shout and curse and spit as well, stooping down to the level of your false leaders in spreading more fear and hatred and lies, shaming our country before the entire world with your incredible naivety and outright ignorance.

Who are you? You are the right wing minority, the religiously extreme, the fearful elders who actually are dumb enough to believe that the Republican party who has spent the last 45 years fighting Medicare actually cares about you. You're the conspiracy believers, the spreaders of fear and hate and ignorance. You're the ill mannered, uneducated, intolerant minority who we have tolerated for far too long.

Who are your leaders, who is your god, who is it that you truly follow? The wizards behind the curtain, the puppet masters and mass manipulators are your guides. They are the insurance industry executives and major shareholders, fighting against health care reform that will end their outrageous profit chasing tyranny of America. They stuff money into the pockets of their fellow conspirators, the right-wing party leaders, who have sat back and done nothing for years, blocking every attempt of those in government who tried to serve the people of this country. Together these wizards you rely on have instigated you with lies and fear and mobilized you into a mass hysteria with the urgent message that they must regain total power in order to defeat the dirty liberals and their evil minded plan to turn America into a socialist communist country!

They are the stuffy, old, close-minded white men who have long failed to grasp the meaning of progress, who have long strived to stifle the progressive call for equality, for humanity, for creativity in new ideas and solutions to lead our nation securely and successfully into the ever changing future. They are the greedy corporatists and the ideologically retarded who have long since learned how to use your beliefs, fears and prejudices as a tool of control and a route to power.

And they’re using you now, their dupes, to once again preserve the status quo that doesn't really benefit anyone but themselves. No, it doesn't even benefit you. You'll be dumped with pretty words as always when they're done with you. You're just a sadly eager tool in their hands. They've nurtured every dark thing within you for years now to attain their goals, and in return done nothing for you other than to fill you with a comforting but false sense of self-righteousness. They've warped your very souls, and you've let them.

Take a good, hard, honest look at your leaders, your co-'patriots', and an even more honest look at yourself. You guys aren't saving the republic, you're just embarrassing the country.

Sincerely,
The No Longer Silent Majority

The term is "sheep," though the phrase "lambs to the slaughter" comes to mind. They are like lemmings, save the first ones only pretend to go over the cliff and laugh at the rest as they die for the amusement of their leaders. And die is exactly what we do.

It's a selfish--no willful--ignorance of their own self-interest.

It's *paying* to go into debt--even bankruptcy, in some cases.

Excellent Hub,

Unfortunately Proud members of the vast right wing conspiracy all have ADD. Otherwise I would send all my right wing friends a link to your Hub page. If you could whittle it down to a max two paragraphs, maybe it would be read. It looks like a bill will be passed but I am dissappointed that there will not be a public option which of course would force the 7 companies who control all of the health plans offered in America to be competitive in price. I have marketed health plans for over 35 years and it is just like dealing with the oil companies. The only price differences are due to deductible choices. Medicare and the VA Health Plans are socialized medicine you know. They don't put any private plans out of business do they?

WOW! Fantastic!

Things considered, didn't you understand my comment on your last health care hub? You're still making sense, being rational and dealing in facts rather than propaganda!

You must be a commie socialist! Horror!

And now, on a more serious note, I am floored by your passion here and your ability to express it so eloquently. I made no mistake becoming a fan.

It only takes a few people with cans of gasoline to turn a small fire into a deadly blazing inferno. That looks like the goal of these maniacs who are marching mindlessly in locked goose-step to the drumbeat of their masters.

If this keeps up, it's only a matter of time before it gets bloody. It's not a question of if but only when.

Jeepers! If only some of the people you're talking about would read this and absorb it. Blisteringly well written!

Yeah, amillar, people hate me.

Surfzen, you make a great point, and I should have realized that myself. (Duh) Been thinking about a shorter, more ADD friendly version, but in order to get the message across in two paragraphs or less, I'd have to be much more blunt, and that'd be mean.

CW Baby, I keep finding stuff about these inflammatory people, which is what prompted my anger here. You being in Arizona, I'm sure you heard about one particularly disgusting inflammatory figure, and Jim in Texas must know of one or two as well. I thought about a hub addressing the problem of these people more directly, but I didn't want to spread their messages. You're right, things are bad out there. There are way too many crazy people walking around unchecked. I'd like to think that if their followers could understand, some of the saner ones would walk away, but I suspect any tragedy that might occur -that might come about as a direct result of toleration of craziness- would just be considered a victory for them and chalked up to the will of God.

A++++ Hub. Nothing more than that needs to be said!

pgrundy 2 years ago

Wow, awesome hub. In the past couple of days some town hall protestors shouted down and harassed a woman in a wheelchair and goaded an elderly man so persistently he lit into one of them in a physical fight that had to be broken up by police. What kind of person takes pride in ridiculing and shouting down a handicapped person at a public forum????? What next? This is just getting hateful beyond measure, and it's a disgrace. You nailed it. Thank you.

Outstanding piece! The "wizards behind the curtain" are the parasitic health care insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies who are spending millions on lobbying and "astroturf" campaigns, the for profit-doctors who are driving up the cost of Medicare and private insurance, the Evangelical Christian right and the NRA who support the campaigns of wingnut senators and congressmen who oppose progressive issues of all kinds as well as effective gun control laws and right to life issues.

Here's a link to a review by Robert Reich of "Heart of Power--Health and Politics" by David Blumenthal and James Morone which traces the history of legislative successes and failures to rationalize our health care "system."

Loved every sentence of this piece! It was like listening to a great piece of music that never missed a beat. You articulated my feelings and views perfectly. They keep supporting the very groups that fight against their best interests, leaving the dirty to work to the liberals and progressives who then get a kick in the teeth for their troubles. Thank you! Kartika

So, once again we see the magic of "free" market kapitalism at work.

As long as we leave the invisible hand alone, everything will be just dandy!

Yeah. What Kartika and CWB said. Unfortunately, I don't expect you will get any comments from the other side here. Why? Because of the fact that your hub is fact-based and rational. There's nothing for them to grab onto...

I like your thinking. And your screen name fits you perfectly. MM

Yes CWBaby, free market capitalism that works only for the rich and powerful. Read a piece on Walmart the other day. They've begun a new directive aimed at taking down their few remaining competitors. I will hardly mourn the passing of K-mart, but darn I sure miss the small places, the mom and pop stores, the privately owned specialty shops that offered greater variety and quality and customer service by people who cared about their products.

As a fishkeeper who is nuts enough to maintain six tanks and a goldfish pond, I was only further disheartened to read that article. Used to be that the local aquarist shops made their bread and butter by selling the basics, which allowed them to stock other items in the trade and offer you a good variety and lots of experienced know-how. Now thanks to stores like Walmart and Petco, everybody buys their basics there at obviously cheaper prices. There's no longer any need to stop by the local fish stores at all, unless you want to purchase healthy fish.

Some of these stores are surviving by aggressively promoting the hobby and specializing in various ways -aquatic plants, coral, custom designed aquascaping, etc. But these are few and far between. Living in a rural area I hate having to drive so far to find a decent fish shop. The selection of products and live fish at the big places suck, the fish are unhealthy and highly likely to die and spread diseases to your tanks and other fish, and they have no plant selections to speak of.

Truly I miss the days when caring people sold you products they were passionate about and knowledgable of as well. Big business will never give us that. That would be a free market society like we used to have. Now we just have a capitalist society.

Mighty Mom, thanks for your comment! I would like to think that it is a rational post, but truly I was so angry and disgusted when I wrote it, lol.

ColdWarBaby 2 years ago

We're certainly on the same frequency Things Considered.

I remember all the small, privately owned businesses my family frequented when I was growing up in Connecticut. There's no comparison.

Sadly, many kids growing up today have never experienced that kind of commerce so they think Wall Mart is just fine.

I'm beginning to believe that collapse is inevitable.

There just doesn't seem to be the will to do the right things.

you should check out my blog...i can help CHANGE the problem...with the help of you, and a small handful of others...better than obama, or ANY president can...

Litigator4444 14 months ago

Think of it this way: what is the MOST controversial health procedure you can get? ANSWER: Abortion. EVERYONE has an opinion on this issue...WORLDWIDE, and how did women get the right to choose??? Was it 300+ politicians voting on a bill proposed by a president who was worrying about his re-election campaign 18 months into office? No. The laws are there to start fixing health care...just like they were there to give women the right to choose (like you said...isms aside...its how they got the right to choose...whether one agrees with that right or not)...check out my blog...im gunning for ALL major insurance "providers"

Our commerce system is based on Capitalism; which is free choice by consumers. Requiring all to buy insurance and plentalizing those who don't. Is NOT free! May if fix the system yes it may, but as a wise man once said "don't tread on me" our my freedsoms! Also, I'm not white! I'm an America & I'm free!!!
